With all the trends in social media, the question still comes up, is in-person networking worth it? The answer is YES. The key to making connections online is much the same as making connections in person. There are a few differences, but the esssence is the same. Let’s get back to the basics with some networking tips and how they apply in each situation to make every experience as positive as we can!
Key #1: Smile
Online Note: Here’s the trick, it’s the same online. Post a great profile picture!
Key #2: Open the conversation and break the ice. Don’t wait for introductions, get out there and mix and mingle!
Online Note: Hmmm, I sense a theme here. Spend time interacting online in the same way you would in person. You’ll meet more people that way.
Key #3: Conversation is truly an art. Showing interest in others, listening, knowing when to ask questions to take the conversation deeper, maintaining an appropriate line of topics, not dominating the conversation and respecting others are keys to the art of conversation. There is also an art to the exit strategy in networking situations. Knowing how to leave one conversation and move on to another is a key part of successful networking.
Online Note: Of course finding blogs you are interested in and commenting both there and on the social media sites are key. If you have more to say, take it back to your home turf and ramble all you like. Know when to engage, and when to take it offline.
Key #4: Follow up! If you have made a new connection, follow up. Connect with them on Facebook, Linked-In and Twitter. Use these services to keep in touch with people who you meet on the way. It’s the trend, and it works!
Online Note: When you meet new people online, look them up on various sites. Check their profile to see if they have a blog and become more familiar with what they have to say.
Key #5: Continue to go to new events and meet new people. It is the only way to make the world smaller and get more connected.
Online note: Research new sites you hear about, you never know when the next Twitter is going to pop up. Have you checked out FourSquare? We’re anxious to see who makes it to Mayor of InSights!
What’s your favorite parallel between online and offline networking?
