No Content = No Keywords

If you’re worried about the SEO (search engine optimization) of your website or wondering if your site is invisible to Google, the content on your website plays a major part in how your site looks to search engines and what keywords are attributed. While there are other factors, like the page titles, use of headers, site architecture, etc., it’s really the content on your site that matters the most — both to search engines and to the people visiting.

When to Worry About Content

If your website only has a few pages — Home, About, Contact, Services — you may have enough content for a potential customer to get information about your business, but probably not enough for them to come back more than once (or to spend much time on the site).  Having additional content on your site, even if it’s just some how-to articles or additional information about your products or services, can make a big difference both to people spending more time (and coming back) and to search engines trying to figure out what keywords your site has.

A Reason to Blog

Providing regularly updated content is becoming increasingly more important to search engines, who will no longer rank a site with a lot of content highly if it hasn’t updated for awhile.  Regularly updated content is important for people too and gives them a reason to check out your site on a regular basis — giving you more opportunity to get your message across.

A Great Partner to Social Media

Connecting with customers via social media is so vital to any business these days.  Having a great place to direct those people to when they are ready to purchase from you (or get more information) is key to sealing the deal.  Content is part of that equation.

What do you think?

I think you nailed it with blogging or otherwise keeping content current. I have a couple of blogs and frequently lapsed in posting and wondered why I never got anywhere with adsense. Since I've been posting at least every other day on all of them, I've seen a steady increase.

Agree with your post…content is still the king and if you don't have much info on your site, resort to other things that could still generate traffic to your site.

I do like a good “how to” article. It adds a bit of extra value, as well as ensuring that I return to a site again.

Great post.

How-to articles can be very useful for businesses selling just about any product or service. People will always have questions about how to use something, even if the instructions are awesome. Thanks for your comment, Andy.

Teena, What are your thoughts on what other things can generate traffic to a site?

Marie Anne, Glad to hear posting more regularly is helping! Google has made how often a site changes or updates a big part of their algorithm. Many sites that used to do quite well SEO-wise, but don't update often, have found their sites dropping in search results. Blogging is one, fairly easy, way to keep a site fresh (for both search engines and visitors).

Ad Post is one of tried and tested way to generate traffic to one of the site we handle currently and joining community forums and Q & A, all in the same industry. Additionally, we still do off-line campaign where it also contains our site link among others. If you don’t have too much content, there are other means to get noticed…build links. Thanks Saz…
