eRubyCon is more of a gathering #erubycon

ruby_partyI think it hit me late Saturday night, standing next to $600 of fine Whiskey while watching a Keynote presentation on the subtle distinctions in Regional variations, that geeks wear their passions on their breast pocket, sometimes right next to their MiFi card.  Geek culture is a rhythm that, if audible to your ears, will drive your soul to seek out fellow dancers.

eRubyCon 2009, latest edition of EdgeCase’s Enterprise Ruby Convention, isn’t really about racking up the largest number of talks and demonstrations on the most number possible parallel track, like some conferences I could name.  One track, one room and at most 6 speakers in a day, it is less of a conference and more of a Gathering.

The geeks give back to those that Give year round

Everyone in the auditorium knew when she stood up that this was going to be an interesting weekend.  Sister Mary, dressed in a stark white Habit, stood out from the crowd of  faded jeans, Converse low-tops and silk screened Tee shirts with ironic catch phrases like some lost Lawrence Welk fan at a Neko Case concert.  But what she told the audience, how passionately she expressed her excitement for what was in essence just a new website, was nothing new by then.  They had heard the same that night from a dozen other local charities and non-profits participating in GiveCamp 2009.  Each charity started the weekend thanking the programmers and developers and designers for donating the next 48 hours of their lives to creating something for their own personal cause.  So unaccustomed to this kind of appreciation for their unique gifts in this world, the audience of software and computer experts were overwhelmed to tears more than once.  At least I was overwhelmed to tears at the opening ceremony, cresting at the pique of the emotional wave with Sister Mary shouting thanks to God that ‘The Geeks Are Coming!’

Spring is a time for renewal

spring_cleanThe official start of Spring is this Saturday.  I am just so excited.  For many Northerners like me the first day of spring is like a starters gun, signalling an important transition.  After months of near hiberntion we start getting active again.  Spring is the start of outside activities, big trips and even bigger home repair projects.  Part of the ritual of inviting the sun and fresh air back into our lives is the annual Spring Clean.

This year consider a Spring Clean of your website too.  Like houses, your website could use that good old, top to bottom clean and repair that brings in the fresh air and light.  Here are some suggestions to get you started

  1. Get a fresh look.  Ask your friend, neighbor, relative to look over your site and give you their opinion.  Part of renewal is to shead new light on things.  Someone other than you can really help cast out the shadows in the corners, so to speak
  2. Get rid of the clutter. Pick three things that you are on the fence about with your website and keep one of them.  Clutter is the hardest thing to avoid on a site, since it is tempting to just keep adding more.  Truth is, if you pair down your site to only show what it truly important you will be much happier with the impression it gives you and others
  3. Hang new pictures on your site.  You’ll be amazed at the difference a few updated images can make
  4. Repair those broken links or get rid of them
  5. Do something fun.  While not all websites are intended to be funny, even serious business sites can benefit from some levity in some places.  Sites that take themselves too seriously forget to take risks with new ideas and approaches an that can really stifle your sites airflow.

What are some of the Spring Clean suggestions you have used or might use this spring?
