Identify Your Ideal Customer Before Implementing Social Media

Knowing your target audience is vital to any social media strategy, which requires identifying your ideal customer in very specific terms.  Many businesses try to target anyone who they think may be even remotely interested in their product.  This can lead to social media presence that is spread way too thin for the company resources (this isn’t a good branding or product strategy either).  It’s best to concentrate on the ideal customer and find the most appropriate 1-3 places online to connect.

To identify the ideal customer, think of job titles or occupations they may have.  Try describing an individual that would purchase your products.  What do they like to do?  What interests them? Why would buying your product solve a problem or provide a benefit?

Once you have your ideal customer in mind, it will be much easier to investigate places they may already be online.  Look for discussion groups, industry associations and publications that may interest your audience.  We’ll discuss finding your audience in more depth in a future post.

It’s Official: Facebook is more evil than Google

There’s been a lot of hype about the recent set of privacy changes by Facebook.  And usually I don’t necessarily have a problem with privacy changes as long as they’re done in a way that allows choice and protects individuals.  But these latest changes by Facebook really are just plain evil.  Even if you opt out according to the instructions, your information is still being shared out without your permission.  This lack of any control and the fact that your network can do things that infringe upon your personal privacy (and you can’t stop them) makes Facebook more evil than Google in my book.

HootSuite changes url shortener ow.ly, creates ht.ly

HootSuite today released changes to its url shortener, ow.ly.  Perhaps bowing to customer preference, Ow.ly is now links directly to the original long URL instead of to a page with the social bar at the top.  HootSuite has moved the social bar functionality to a new URL shortening service, ht.ly (pronounced “hoot-ly”), for those who prefer it.  Either service can be selected as the default for use with HootSuite (and changed at any time).

Using Twitter to Save Your Customer Service

Monitoring Twitter can save an otherwise negative customer service experience.

Recently I tried a 30 day trial of DimDim (webinar & conferencing software).  During the 30 days, I was able to run through a webinar and was reasonably happy with the results, but a few people had technical problems that I had questions about.  As the trial expired, I received several emails from a couple of people from the company reminding me to upgrade and asking if I had any questions.  Sounds just fine right?  Except I emailed a couple of them my questions and they never answered.

FutureMidwest’s Final Grade – Were Expectations Met?

FutureMidwest, which was last week, brought business, marketing and technology people together to exchange ideas and foster entrepreneurship.  There were many events planned all week, but I started with volunteering on Thursday and TechCocktail in the evening.  The energy and networking at TechCocktail was unreal.  People were excited to get together and celebrate what this region has to offer in terms of innovating for our future.  The conference itself opened strong on Friday, with some notable speakers and presentations (more on those below).  Did it live up to my hopes and expectations? Mostly.
