Connect With Nearby Customers with Nearby Tweets

nearbytweetsEver want to connect with people nearby that may be potential customers (or actual customers)? What about running promotions or events by using Twitter? Nearby Tweets give you a list of both nearby people on Twitter and what they’re saying.  You can easily change the location and search radius if you’re interested in what’s going on in another location, which would be a great way to monitor conferences and events. Possibly the best feature is the ability to search for a keyword in a specific location. Using this feature, you could monitor what was being said about your company or product at a specific location.  If you present at events or conferences, this would be an easy way to get instant feedback.

Nearby Tweets is easy to use and very intuitive.  When you go to the site it already has a pretty good idea of where you are, but you can easily put in a specific address, radius and keywords.  Just hold your mouse over the change location/add keywords button and an interface slides out where you can make changes and update the page.  To help you understand how to use Nearby Tweets, they have pages for both personal and businesss uses.  If you come up with a use not on the page, I’m sure Brian Cray would love to hear it.

Why I Have to Have a Smartphone but Can't Live Without My iPhone

iphonepandukasenakaNot only do I work online, but I pretty much live online.  I use web-based applications for just about everything – email, calendar, documents, networking, etc.  It’s much easier to have information available online from any computer than have to rely on having my laptop all the time.  However, the drawback is needing some way to connect to that information without a computer – a smartphone.  Ever since my first blackberry I’ve been hooked on smartphones and having all the information I want at any time with a touch of a button.

Recently Aaron and I finally got iPhones, and now I wonder why we waited so long.  Obviously there have been benefits to having a device that has been upgraded a few times since it first came out.  But the functionality and design of the iPhone makes me wish my computer worked as elegantly (and as a Mac it does come close).  I have yet to run into something I can do on my laptop that I can’t do on the iPhone.  Granted, there are a few things I would rather do on my laptop – and typing long blog articles is certainly one of them.  I also know there are some limitations of the iPhone, but I have yet to run into one that I really care about.

Carrying around the iPhone makes it easy to stay connected to my network and clients, so I’m not as concerned with being away from my computer while I attend business or networking events. And unlike a lot of technology, the iPhone never seems to get in my way.  It’s as easy to use and fun to play with as my first computer way back in the 19**’s. What other technology can you say that about?

Twitter Tip – Automate Tweets with Twitterfeed

twitterfeedThe point of Twitter is to have a conversation, but it also nice to send out useful information to your followers – perhaps links of interest or a link when you post to your blog. Twitterfeed allows you to use RSS feeds to automatically send links to your Twitter account.  Just add the RSS feed from your blog to Twitterfeed and you will automatically tweet the blog title with a link whenever you add a new post.

Once you have an account you can add any RSS feed and tell Twitterfeed how often you want it to post items from your feed (every 30m, every hour, etc) and how many items to post (1-5).  Twitterfeed will only post new items, so don’t worry about posting redundant content.  Once you add a feed it may take a few minutes for Twitterfeed to pick it up.

Twitterfeed can also be used to post directly to identi.ca and custom laconica installations. Using Twitterfeed in conjunction with Ping.fm or HelloTxt you can also post to any sites those services support.

Here at Sazbean, we use Twitterfeed to automatically tweet our blog posts and links we add to delicious.

If you use Twitterfeed, we’d love to hear how in the comments.
