  • Google Plans to Upgrade Old Billboards in Street View (ReadWriteWeb)

According to a new patent that was just granted to Google, the company could soon extend the reach of its advertising program in Google Maps to Street View. This patent, which was originally filed on July 7, 2008, describes a new system for promoting ads in online mapping applications. In this patent, Google describes how it plans to identify buildings, posters, signs and billboards in these images and give advertisers the ability to replace these images with more up-to-date ads. In addition, Google also seems to plan an advertising auction for unclaimed properties.

Advertisers may have thought that their ads were good for posterity once they were captured by the roaming vans for Google’s Street View, but it looks like Google has other plans.  This is a very interesting virtual meets physical world scenario.  The advertising placements were once in the physical world, but when Google recorded and digitized them, they became virtual – and capable of being edited.  Google provides Google Maps, Local & Street View free of charge (and sells ad placements on the site via Google AdWords), but this patent will give them the opportunity to sell advertising inside their content.  Google’s advertising has mostly been around others content (other than their search results).  They are starting to move towards creating content to have ads around – kind of like a Media company might do.

  • The 10 Stages of Social Media Business Integration (Mashable)

An overnight success ten years in the making, social media is as transformative as it is evolutionary. At last, 2010 is expected to be the year that social media goes mainstream for business. …Full social media integration often happens in stages — it’s an evolutionary process for companies and consumers alike.

Social Media may be better understood now, but it still brings up a lot of questions about how to use it for business and how the business should integrate it into it’s operations.  This is a good post with the steps a business can take to integrate Social Media and what occurs at each step.
  • Social Media vs. SEO (Socialnomics)

There will be a blending of search and social. We are already seeing this with Twitter being incorporated into the Google organic results. Consumers we will be privy to a) sponsored listings b) organic listings c) social graph listings.

Social Media and SEO were largely separate marketing tactics – at least until the search engines started incorporating social media content into their listings.  Now, what you post on Twitter or Facebook (somewhat) may show up on a search results page along with other the organic results and the paid results.  This means that what you do on social media has an impact on your SEO – and SEO and keywords should be at least considered when writing content for social media.  As with all SEO, the rules may revolve around what computers/search engines do with your content, but your content is read by humans – don’t get too carried away with writing for computers.
  • Twitter Tips: 5 Proven Ways to Get Retweeted (CIO)

We all like to think we’re interesting. And on Twitter, that’s often measured and validated by how frequently other people retweet your posts.

Retweets are certainly one way to measure your influence on Twitter.  Providing good information is one way that people may retweet you, but there area also considerations such as time of day and keywords.  While I think this information is interesting and somewhat useful, I think it’s better to provide good information than to try to play a game too much.  Also, instead of looking at overall trends, try looking specifically at your own tweets to see what types of messages, time of day and keywords work for your own content and network.
  • 6 Foursquare Apps We’d Love to See (Mashable)

Foursquare is one of the crucial new social networks to keep tabs on, and for entrepreneur types, the recent release of its open API is big news. It may be time for developers to start shifting away from Twitter and start tinkering with something a bit more Square.

I’m a bit of a Foursquare fan (look me up if you’d like to connect there).  While it certainly is fun, it’s also interesting to see what places my network visits.  And I have come across some new venues I’d like to try when I’m in the area.  With Foursquare opening up their system through an API, other developers will have some access to develop applications on top of Foursquare’s network.  I personally would like to see more of a game added – where you can leave little things for people to find and maybe specific messages for specific friends, plus more badges and ways to get points.
