Top Internet Strategy, Marketing & Technology Links – Jan 26, 2010

Josh Williams, chief executive officer and co-founder of Alamofire, a Austin, Texas-based company behind the location-based mobile application Gowalla, stopped by our office last week to discuss his company and its future.. – GigaOM Video: Gowalla CEO Josh Williams on Foursquare, Yelp & the Future of Location (GigaOM)

There’s a lot of interest in these location-based mobile “applications” (in quotes because they’re really games at this point).  These apps tie in where a person is with who they are and how loyal they are to the establishment.  Which allows you to reward loyal customers.  Possibly in the near future, local businesses will also be able to advertise to people in the area (not just those who check in).  It’s interesting to hear one of the creators talk about these types of applications.

Want to eat healthier and exercise more in 2010? That’s tough! Want to learn about search engine optimization (SEO) so you can disregard the rumors and know what’s important? That’s easy! Here’s how to gain SEO knowledge as you go about your new start to 2010: – Google SEO Resource for Beginners (Google Webmaster Central)

SEO is always on the mind of people who use the Internet as a business tool.  Why?  Because when potential customers are ready to make a purchase (or researching that purchase), they’re probably going to do a search to find out where to buy.  Not only are those customers looking for where to buy a product, they’re also looking for what they should buy and what other people think of the product.  Understanding basic SEO is important for designing your website and your content in a way that makes it easier for search engines to understand what it is you do (and therefore be found by your potential customers).

Business on the Internet can be interesting. What is more motivating is the period between calling, and closing. When you sell something on the Internet, you would have to at least  build a relationship with your potential client, first and foremost. The same approach as you would in a brick and mortar business. – Cold Web-Calling (AainaA)

When someone online shows interest in your products (or services) by requesting more information (or however else you’re collecting leads), what’s the proper way to followup (a web cold-call)?  AainnA has some great tips and some potential steps for you to follow as you work on closing the sale.

As we approach the imminent launch of the Apple Tablet and analyze new trends coming out of out of this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (our full coverage), now is good time to reflect on what the web will look like in the next decade — and beyond. – What the Web of Tomorrow Will Look Like: 4 Big Trends to Watch (Mashable)

No earth-shattering predictions here.  But good summary of current trends and where they’re probably leading.  As far as what the web of the next decade will look like – that’s a bit harder to predict since the technologies and services that will shape it are only in the early development stages.  (And it’s hard to know how people will adopt and use those technologies and incorporate them into their daily lives.)

Take the guesswork of Facebook marketing, and follow these 5 tips for making the most of your fan page. – Facebook Marketing Tips: Make the Most of Your Fan Page (Online Marketing Blog)

Many companies are on Facebook and have a fan page.  Many of those same companies struggle with how to use the fan page – how is it different than the company’s blog – what content should be posted – how can the page be leveraged to get the most out of the technology (Facebook).  Online Marketing Blog has some good tips for how to improve your fan page and increase the interactions with your fans/customers.

We post links to stories about how to use the web for business throughout the day on Twitter, Google Reader Shared or Delicious.  Also, if you have a post or link you think is worth sharing, please let us know!
