In reality, there are common mistakes that business leaders unfamiliar with social media marketing seem to stumble into. These errors reveal a lack of social media savvy and often negate the effectiveness of those marketing efforts. – 11 Social Media Mistakes Your Company Must Avoid (Business Insider)

Good tips for things to avoid when using social media for business – I see these mistakes happen all the time.  One of the biggest mistakes is an incomplete profile.  If you want people to feel like you have a presence on that social network, take the 5 minutes to fill out a complete profile so it looks like you want to be there.  It’s like coming to a meeting late, sitting in the back and playing with your Blackberry the whole time.

Let’s say your business is a boutique PR firm called “Starburst PR”. Maybe you’re not getting a lot of traction in the news or on social media yet, but you’re working on it and want to keep track of your progress. You don’t want to be shelling out hundreds or thousands of dollars a month to a software firm, but you do need some way to get organized. Welcome to the Absolute Beginners Guide to Media Monitoring. This step-by-step tutorial will help you set up email alerts to bring media mentions to you, reducing time spent and helping you keep track of engagement. – Google Buzz: The Mainstream’s Geo-Social Network? (ImpactWatch)

These are good tips for monitoring your brand (and important keywords) on Twitter & Blogs.  I use Google Reader to keep track of mentions of “sazbean” or “sarah worsham” plus some others.  On Twitter, I use HootSuite to monitor for mentions of sazbean so I can respond more quickly.  If you’d like more information on how to monitor Social Media, Ken Burbary has put together a list of Social Media Monitoring Solutions.

Google Buzz could quickly become the most popular location-based service on the Internet. Not only does Buzz integrate itself into Gmail, which will give it a large mainstream user base, but Buzz also puts geolocation front and center on its mobile sites. In addition, the new Buzz layer in the Google Maps mobile interface makes it incredibly easy to find geotagged Buzz messages around you. – Google Buzz: The Mainstream’s Geo-Social Network? (ReadWriteWeb)

Google Buzz is a lot like your Facebook news feed – you see a list of what everyone is doing and you can comment or like things and it keeps everything together as a conversation.  Google Buzz looks like it might be useful if you’re actually connected to people you want to hear from through your email account, but it certainly isn’t as easy to connect with as large an audience as you can connect with on Twitter.  So far it doesn’t look like there are good ways to filter things and everything also shows up in your email – meaning you’d want to keep your connections down to the really important ones (and few).  For some reason Google hasn’t rolled Buzz out to Apps accounts yet – it seems like it would be a useful collaboration tool for businesses, especially if they tied it into Google Wave.

In order to move your site up in the search engine rankings you have to get your optimized content to the search engines in the most streamlined way possible. There are some common problems that often stand in the way of that. These problems may not keep the search engines from finding and indexing and even ranking your content, however they can greatly effect the performance of that content in terms of how well it ranks in the search results. – SEO 101 – Part 7: Everything You Need to Know About Site Architecture and Internal Linking (Search Engine Guide)

There are some generally accepted SEO practices that most websites follow.  Then there are the SEO practices that related to internal linking and site architecture that most websites tend to ignore.  Following these best practices can help improve your site’s performance on certain keywords and may give you a leg up on the competition.
