Top Internet Strategy, Marketing & Technology Links – Mar 4, 2010

For schools hit hard by the recession, Twitter is an inexpensive solution to the growing problem of increasing class sizes. It is a tried-and-true platform to let conversations flourish. Indeed, Dr. Parry declared that “it was the single thing that changed the classroom dynamics more than anything I’ve ever done teaching.”- How Twitter in the Classroom is Boosting Student Engagement (Mashable)

While technology in the classroom has changed over the years, it’s really done little to increase participation.  The proliferation of laptops probably actually decreased it since it’s much easier to pay attention to something else.  I was pleasantly surprised that a couple of college professors have found that Twitter has increased engagement.  And students seem to like it since it also serves as a study guide and a continuing conversation outside the lecture.  I’m not sure you’d get the same results at the high school level due to maturity issues (and that most schools ban cell phones during school, for good reason).

I’m often asked by entrepreneurs and business owners whether it is worth blogging, and if so, what they should blog about. On the first question, the answer is obvious to me — you must blog as an entrepreneur. – HOW TO: Create a Successful Company Blog (Mashable)

As an entrepreneur or small business, you’re probably relatively unknown outside your local area and network.  When someone looks up your company name (or your name) online in order to do research about whether they should purchase from you, what do they find?  They probably find your website, which has information about your goods and services, which is fine, but doesn’t give any deep insight into your expertise.  Hopefully they find a LinkedIn profile with a nice resume, experience and some recommendations.  But if you want them to find what you really know about your industry, you want them to find your blog, where you can give helpful information and insight, answer questions and connect with potential customers.

A new study out from the CJR reveals print publications have a lesser set of standards for what they allow to show up on the web. Victor Navasky, chairman of the CJR tells the NYT, standards on the web continue to evolve, but for now it’s “chaos out there.” So, be careful with what you read out there. – CHART OF THE DAY: Fact-Checking And Copy-Editing Don’t Happen As Much On The Web (Business Insider)

I’m not sure why this is news since it’s always been the case since people started posting news online.  The turn-around time for news online is so much shorter than  for print that there really isn’t time to fact-check everything in as much depth – by the very nature of the medium.  However, that isn’t to say that consumers shouldn’t be wary of what they read – whether offline or online.  Get different viewpoints on any issue to form your own opinions (which is a bit easier online).

We post links to stories about how to use the web for business throughout the day on Twitter, Google Reader Shared or Delicious. Also, if you have a post or link you think is worth sharing, please let us know!
