While Twitter promotes their open developer platform, Social Times has confirmed a number of new deals which involve 6 figure monthly fees for access to the Twitter stream. Both Google and Bing recently announced deals which involve the exchange of access to the public stream for significant sums of money, yet it wasn’t clear that this practice continued on down the line (of smaller developers). While the stream may appear free, if you consume too much information from Twitter, you will be billed. – Twitter Charging More Companies For Access To Firehose (Social Times)

To be clear, when the firehose is mentioned, direct access to the full stream from Twitter’s API is what they’re really talking about.  If you use a program other than Twitter’s website to Tweet, you’re using the API, which allows programmers to tap into Twitter’s services.  The full stream of data coming from Twitter is very valuable for knowing what’s going on in real time.  Twitter puts limits on the amount of data that you’re allowed to access through the API unless you pay a fee to get the full stream.  Due to the value of this data, it makes business sense for Twitter to charge for it.

After spending just an hour with my clients, I had a significantly deeper sense of who they were, how they operated and their personalities. All of which will make me more productive in working with them in the future. Besides, when I email them now, or speak to them on the phone, I can see their faces in my mind’s eye. – Why Face-to-Face Meetings Still Matter (WebWorkerDaily)

Meeting people face to face can have a huge impact on the relationship down the line.  When face-to-face isn’t possible, having phone or skype calls works pretty well too.  I’m all for face-to-face meetings when they make sense and when there’s a set agenda.  But there are still meetings which are a waste of time – in person, or not – and those we could all do without.
