Fact: When it comes to social media, it’s not really about the tools; it’s how you use them. The more effectively and productively that Twitter, blogs, Facebook, et al are used, the more success you will have. On that note, here are seven things that will probably kill your social media efforts… – The Seven Deadly Sins of Social Media (Mark Evans Tech)

Using social media well is requires thinking about your audience and what they want and need.  Mark Evans has some great guidelines all in one place, but most of them are (or should be) common sense.

Like most start ups we didn’t have much money to play with and certainly didn’t have a marketing budget. Although we didn’t have a marketing budget we did have to spread the word about our services and let people know that we were here and we have largely done that through social media. We now work with large brands who are starting to see the massive power of social media but I also think that if used correctly and by people who are passionate enough about their product or service social media can be one of the best cheap marketing tools and route to market. – How To Market Your Business Using Social Media When You Have Zero Budget (Simply Zesty)

How many small businesses signup for Twitter and Facebook, start a blog and then do nothing with them? I see it all the time.  Social media is a cheap investment in terms of money, but it does require a time investment.  People have no interest in you online if you’re not actively there, contributing and having conversations.

The number of US unique viewers of online video increased 10.5% year-over-year, in February 2010, according to VideoCensus data from The Nielsen Company.

Last month, 141 million unique online viewers watched online video, compared to 127.6 million unique viewers in February 2009. On a month-over-month basis, the total number of online video viewers fell 1.1%, from 142.7 million in January 2010. – February Online Video Usage Rises 10% (Marketing Charts)

I love statistics.  Of course one number like a 10% rise is useless without knowing the overall trend and what that rise represents.  But it turns out that online video usage is trending upwards.  Video is an untapped resource for many small businesses – may be worth checking out.

We post links to stories about how to use the web for business throughout the day on Twitter, Google Reader Shared or Delicious.
