Flickr Adds Social Sharing for Photos (Finally)

Flickr finally added social sharing for individual photos to their website. Yay! Now it’s really easy to share any individual photo to social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Blogger or WordPress. While Flickr photos have always been shareable, up until now, it’s either required a bit more technical knowledge or a plugin. So, welcome, Flickr, to a social world!

Avoid Comparing Oranges to Apples When Measuring Social Media ROI

Apples and orangesAs business people, we like to know what we’re getting for our money. If we invest in social media or some other type of marketing activity, we’d like to know how many sales we’re getting for that investment. This helps us understand whether or not the tactic is working and whether it’s worth the cost.  However, when evaluating different marketing tactics, we need to be careful about comparing and relating measurements to avoid trying to compare apples and oranges. An Example of Using Social Media to Improve Customer Service and Increase Brand Loyalty & Reputation

Missed the boatMany businesses really miss the boat when it comes to providing content and value that their customers want. Here is an example of a salesperson providing great customer service using Twitter by providing personalized offers that his customers actually want. Instead of blasting out a promotion to everyone, taking the extra effort to let specific customers know about offers they’ve expressed interest in not only increases the probability of a sale, it also increases brand loyalty and reputation. Build It and They Won’t Come

the builderFor whatever reason, there’s this misconception that if you put up a website or a blog (or Facebook page or Twitter page, etc.), you’ll suddenly get a ton of business. Having a website or blog is great if people want to learn more about your business, but they have to know that you even exist first (awareness). Just having a site on the web isn’t enough for people to know you exist. Building awareness online is just like building awareness offline. It takes some combination of time, effort and/or money. The (Real) Meaning of Social Media ROI

ROI gets thrown around a lot in marketing circles. You can’t measure it. You can. Blah blah blah. However, as any finance major will tell you, ROI (return on investment) has a very specific meaning. Stefanos Karagos reminds us what ROI is and how it can be measured in social media. I know I posted a presentation yesterday, but this one really is important enough to see asap. Thanks to Brandon Chesnutt for posting the link to this presentation.

The Rise of Social Commerce

It’s no secret that companies are trying to leverage social media to sell things. The trick is in figuring out how to social networks as something more than another promotional channel. Social commerce (online) is still relatively new and companies are still trying to figure things out. Lora Cecere and Jeremiah Owyang from the Altimeter Group recently gave a webinar on some of their research findings about social commerce:

[136/365] PrudenceEvery business hopes to use the power of the crowd to spread the word about their fabulous products and services. Many are disappointed when they put this awesome offer out there and no one picks it up. Or they create and post a hilarious video that no one shares. What gives? Maybe you need some sort of enticement (or a bounty) to get things kicked off… [Read more...]

Conversation, The Missing Piece of Most Social Media Marketing

Exchanging life experienceMost companies are pretty decent at self-promotion. Using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. to get their message out is a no brainer. Some companies are even good at content creation. Most are also decent at content curation. Finding “stuff” to post that’s interesting is relatively easy. Stopping to have conversations with people seems to be super difficult. [Read more...]

Step 1 for Social Media Implementation: Setting Social Media Policy

STOP ALL WAYSTOP! Before you setup your Twitter profile or Facebook page, do you have a social media policy for your organization? While your company or organization may just be starting to use social media, it is likely that employees and others connected to your organization are already using and interacting on social media in some fashion. To avoid problems in the future, it’s a good idea to set some guidelines on how you would like employees (and contractors and vendors) to use social media, especially if they are representing the company. While it is almost impossible to completely control how employees and connections use social media, setting guidelines can help employees understand what you expect from them and how you envision using social media as an organization. Setting social media policy should be the first step in any implementation plan. [Read more...]
