Best of 2008 – Which Social Networks Are Best for Promoting Your Business Content?

One way to increase the awareness of your products and services (and your brand) is to have your website and/or blog content show up on social networking sites such as Digg, Newsvine, Del.icio.us, etc.  Users of these social networks will hopefully discover your useful content and visit your site – possibly becoming returning visitors and passing on your name to co-workers, family and friends.  Social networking sites usually have different types of audiences, so it is worth investigating them to see which ones work best for your target visitors.

Here is an summary of some of the top social networking sites:

  • Digg – Started initially in the tech industry as a way to link and rank news and articles and has quickly spread to gaming, and off-the-wall.  Digg is trying to widen their audience, but in my experience, many business-related articles are quickly lost in their huge amount of submissions.
  • FaceBook – Started as college students only, but now open to all.  Best for connecting with long-lost friends and for networking with acquaintances.  There are business networks and groups, but FaceBook does not make it easy to separate close friends with business networking acquaintances.  One possibility is to create two personas – one for work and one for personal use.  Posts from your blog can be displayed in your profile and you can create pages to promote your business.
  • MySpace – Probably one of the more mainstream of the social networks, MySpace is heavily used by younger generations and by entertainment and music groups wanting to connect with their fans.
  • LinkedIn – Targets business users who want to keep track of their networking contacts.  Business can join and create groups to promote themselves.
  • Del.icio.us – Is a link sharing social network where you can share links with notes and tags.  Can be useful across multiple industries and a nice way to add more content to your own blog/site (check out their widgets).
  • Technorati – Started as a way to view news on tech blogs (hence the name) and see their ranking (as a function of how many other tracked blogs link to them) – is now used across many industries for an overview of what’s going on in the blogosphere.
  • StumbleUpon – Has a fairly general audience who use the site to ’stumble upon’ new content that others have submitted.
  • Newsvine – Started as a sort of portal with voting for content from news organization, it now accepts content from anywhere, but still heavily favors news websites.  May be worth a look for your business blog since you can also start your own column on the site.
  • Sphinn – Targets Search & Internet Marketing Professionals.

As mentioned previously, it is also worth taking a look at industry websites to see if there are smaller niche social networks and communities in your own industry.

Finding Twitter Influencers to Follow

influence4rbReader Steven Woods had a great question that I think might be useful to others, so I’m sharing it in a post (thanks for the question,Steven!):

Have you seen any good tools for understanding who is the most influential in a given subject? Measurements and/or ranking of network/relevance/retweets?

Here are a few tools that can help find the influencers for a subject or in your network:

Mr. Tweet will analyze your network and followers and suggest who you should be following back as well as influencers outside of your network.

TwitterGrader will give you a suggested list of people to follow based on keywords in your own tweets.

Twellow won’t necessarily give you influencers, but it is a directory of tweeters by subject, so it can help you find people in an industry to follow.

TweetScan, TwitScoop, TweetDeck and Twitter all give you the ability to search on a keyword and see what people have said about it. I happen to monitor a few keywords using TweetDeck and have found it useful for finding new people to follow and connect with.

Top Tools for Business Twittering

toolsbategaOnce you’ve decided to use Twitter for your business, using the right tools can make the entire experience much easier and more rewarding.  Here are some of the top tools that I use.  If you have others, please share them in the comments.  Since Twittering is exploding in use, I expect more tools to be developed and to add to this list in the future.

  • TweetDeck – Businesses typically have a lot of followers on Twitter (or should) and usually have a large number of people they are following (following people who follow you is a good way to connect).  This can mean a large number of updates which can be difficult to scan through for the important content.  TweetDeck makes it easy to monitor groups of Twitterers, keywords, and get a quick keyword cloud for what’s hot.  For more info, see our review of TweetDeck.
  • TweetScan – TweetScan lets you set up searches for keywords so you can monitor what is being said about your company, products, and in your industry.  Monitor those searches through email, rss or on their website.
  • TwitScoop – similar to TweetScan, TwitScoop lets you search for various keywords, but also gives you some graphs to see when the keywords have been popular over the past 6 hours, day or 3 days.  While, TwitScoop does not have rss or email capabilities like TweetScan, you can get a nice visual representation of trending for a keyword so I consider them complementary tools.
  • TwitterFeed – If you’re actively participating in the online community, you are sharing links to content other than your own – probably on many different social networks.  Twitterfeed allows you to automate Twittering about those links from any social network that has a rss feed.  Right now we’re using Twitterfeed to automatically tweet our blog posts and our delicious posts.
  • Twellow – Twitter is a wide open frontier and it can be difficult to find people who you should be following in your industry.  Twellow gives you a listing of Twitterers divided up by industry and subject area.  You should consider adding your own business Twitter username if it isn’t already there.
  • SocialToo – Following everyone who follows you can get tiring.  SocialToo automates that process, send a direct message to each person you follow, and also gives you the ability to send surveys out through Twitter.
