  • Google Plans to Upgrade Old Billboards in Street View (ReadWriteWeb)

According to a new patent that was just granted to Google, the company could soon extend the reach of its advertising program in Google Maps to Street View. This patent, which was originally filed on July 7, 2008, describes a new system for promoting ads in online mapping applications. In this patent, Google describes how it plans to identify buildings, posters, signs and billboards in these images and give advertisers the ability to replace these images with more up-to-date ads. In addition, Google also seems to plan an advertising auction for unclaimed properties.

Advertisers may have thought that their ads were good for posterity once they were captured by the roaming vans for Google’s Street View, but it looks like Google has other plans.  This is a very interesting virtual meets physical world scenario.  The advertising placements were once in the physical world, but when Google recorded and digitized them, they became virtual – and capable of being edited.  Google provides Google Maps, Local & Street View free of charge (and sells ad placements on the site via Google AdWords), but this patent will give them the opportunity to sell advertising inside their content.  Google’s advertising has mostly been around others content (other than their search results).  They are starting to move towards creating content to have ads around – kind of like a Media company might do.

Your 2010 Internet Strategy – Ways to Use Outposts

You’ve done some research and have decided on 3 or so outposts (see Friday’s post for more on outposts). There may be some confusion about the value of having outposts.  Luckily Chris Brogan recently wrote a great post on how outposts improve your ecosystem.  What I want to focus on today is some examples of how you can use your outposts – I think seeing a few examples may help clarify what a good outpost is and how you can use it.

  • Google News Stops Hosting New AP Content (paidContent)

In a sign that Google’s negotiations with the Associated Press over a new licensing contract may have reached a standstill, new AP articles are no longer being hosted in Google (NSDQ: GOOG) News; Search Engine Land‘s Danny Sullivan, who first reported the development, says that new AP articles haven’t been hosted on the site since Dec. 24. Google isn’t providing an explanation

Google and the AP have been in a bit of a tiff this past year.  The AP doesn’t like that Google is linking to and hosting full articles and Google thinks the AP is overblowing the issue.  At stake is the content that costs companies to produce – the same content they hope to make money from (either from advertising or charging for).  Google, on the other hand, hopes to provide the best possible information to searchers – so they can place their own advertising around search results.  Most content sites receive a good portion of their traffic from Google, so they’re not without their own power in the argument.  It should be interesting to see how it pans out.
