Think of Social Media as a Great Party

partytanakawhoEver been to a great party?  (I hope so, if not – find one soon!)  What made the party great?  Good food?  Good music? Probably the most important part of a good party is good people.  People who you like and feel comfortable with make it easy to have a good time.  Think of social media like a good party.

You arrive at the party.

Do you just start shouting at people? I hope not.  You probably scan the room to see who is there and what they’re doing.  You may start mingling and greeting people, listening to what people are saying in smaller conversations.

You find some interesting people.

You listen to the conversations and introduce yourself when they look up at you.  You continue to listen, but speak up occasionally with good points that add to the overall conversation.  You learn more about the people who are around you.

You start to dance.

The music gets a bit louder and people are starting to hit the dance floor.  You grab a drink and dance with the people you’ve met.  Everyone is having a great time.

Someone special catches your eye.

From across the room you notice someone really special who is looking directly at you.  You make your way across the room and start up an engaging conversation that makes the time seem to fly.

You have a great time.

Social media is about being social.  Meet new people, learn what they do and have engaging conversations.  The more people you meet, the more great conversations you will have, and the more likely you will find business leads.  Remember to have a great time!

Using Facebook to Promote Your Business

facebookMany of us have heard of Facebook and many of us use it to connect with family and friends.  But, have you ever considered using Facebook to promote your business?

Facebook is now both the largest and fastest growing social network.  With people spending a great deal of time there during their personal time, there is also an increased opportunity to connect with both customers and business contacts.

The biggest concern I have heard from clients/readers is not letting business contacts see all the silly stuff you do with your family and friends.  Facebook makes it possible to create different networks of contacts each with different levels of access to your profile.  This allows you to create a business network that doesn’t have access to your poke war with your college buddies.

Ok, so how do you tap into this network of potential?  One way is through traditional advertising – ads on the side of the page.  Facebook contextual targets their ads, so there is a bit of a higher chance they’ll be clicked on.  But, as with all advertising, people tend to ignore ads.

If you start thinking a bit more about your customers, you could create a page that highlights your business and automatically imports content from various sources – your website, blog, twitter, etc.  The idea here is to provide valuable content for your customers and a means for them to interact with your company (via a discussion).  This page could then be promoted through ads on the network.

Also available are groups. You could create one for your customers so they could interact with each other as well as you.  These work best if there’s a bit of momentum, so try enlisting some of your customers and business contacts to help you out.  You’ll need to lead discussions to get things started – and don’t treat this like a spam list or it’ll have a very negative effect.

Do you use Facebook for business?  If so, how?

Finding Twitter Influencers to Follow

influence4rbReader Steven Woods had a great question that I think might be useful to others, so I’m sharing it in a post (thanks for the question,Steven!):

Have you seen any good tools for understanding who is the most influential in a given subject? Measurements and/or ranking of network/relevance/retweets?

Here are a few tools that can help find the influencers for a subject or in your network:

Mr. Tweet will analyze your network and followers and suggest who you should be following back as well as influencers outside of your network.

TwitterGrader will give you a suggested list of people to follow based on keywords in your own tweets.

Twellow won’t necessarily give you influencers, but it is a directory of tweeters by subject, so it can help you find people in an industry to follow.

TweetScan, TwitScoop, TweetDeck and Twitter all give you the ability to search on a keyword and see what people have said about it. I happen to monitor a few keywords using TweetDeck and have found it useful for finding new people to follow and connect with.

If anyone has any other tools or methods, please feel free to share.
