Using Social Media to have a Conversations over the Counter

Small businesses excel at forming connections with their customers and network.  Well before the Internet and online social networks, small businesses had real life social networks where they probably knew just about everyone in their town or village. Being part of a community is still important for any small business, but the Internet and online social media allow the reach to be extended to customers and partners that would never have been reached otherwise.

I grew up in a small town. My dad owned a saloon. I’ve been thinking a lot about his social networks and how they relate to what I do online. More Twitter Followers Isn’t Necessarily Better

We’ve all seen those Twitter accounts – they’re following 24,506 people and have 24,302 followers.  They’re in a mad rush to get as many followers as possible by following so many people every day and removing those that don’t follow them back.  Having more followers isn’t necessarily a good thing, and the results of a new research project has the data to show it:

To reach this conclusion, the researchers examined the Twitter accounts of over 54 million active users, out of some 80 million accounts crawled by their servers. They then went on to measure various statistics about these accounts, including audience size, retweet influence and mention influence. The conclusion? Those with the largest number of followers may be “popular” Twitterers, but that’s not necessarily related to their influence. High follower counts don’t always mean someone is being retweeted or mentioned in any meaningful ways. – The Million Follower Fallacy: Audience Size Doesn’t Prove Influence on Twitter (ReadWriteWeb)

Google Has an Identity Problem

Well, two problems actually, but let’s take them one at a time.  The biggest problem for me is that I have three different identities as far as Google is concerned – and they all have a different Google Profile with a different gmail address and it’s own login.  I have one personal gmail account and two business Apps accounts and there’s no way to consolidate them. So how do people know where to connect with me on Google’s systems?  How do I manage different identities and who gets what information?
