I played around with setting up a Unity Mobile site last week for a review I wrote over at New Media Hub.  While the article is geared towards media publishers, I think it has some good info for anyone interested in creating a mobile website.  And as the title of this article says, I was able to create one in about ten minutes.

unitymobilelogoPriced at $99/month, Unity Mobile provides all the tools for local media companies to create a mobile site fast.  By using their templates, adding some images, text, and RSS feeds, a publisher can create and activate a mobile website in around 10 minutes.  Revenue is generated via CPM or CPC based advertising networks with 50% of the revenue going to the publisher.  While publishers cannot sell their own advertising, Unity’s system is ideal for local media who want to concentrate on delivering their content on mobile devices without worrying about finding advertisers. – Quick Mobile Site? You can try out Unity Mobile for free.  They have 30 day trials, but even without the trial, you won’t be charged until your site actually goes live.  If you happen to give Unity Mobile a try, I’d love to hear how it works for you.

  • Is $99/month a fair price? That's a lot more than hosting for a typical website.
  • Hi Ann, For $99/month they make sure your mobile website works on most major phones. As you may be aware, the problem with mobile devices is that they all have a different screen size. So it can be very difficult to make your mobile site look good on all of them. Unity Mobile does this for you, as well as all the back end you need to create a site. All you have to do is choose some templates, add some RSS feeds, and customize them to look like your brand. This problem is quite different than anything normal websites face.

There are also some sites which will create a mobile site for free, by taking a cut on any advertising. These are mostly setup for larger or local media sites, so they'd probably want proven revenue to get that sort of deal. One of these sites, is Verve Wireless, which I also covered at New Media Hub here:

If you have a suggestion for a company that provides mobile sites at a lower price, please let me know... I'd love to check them out.

Thanks for your comment and for reading!
