There’s been a lot of talk lately about whether companies should advertise using Facebook ads or Google ads. I think that, as with any marketing or advertising decision, it depends. It depends on who you’re trying to reach with what message and what marketing objective.

Book Review: Marketing Management – The Big Picture by Christie L. Nordhielm
Most marketing textbooks are hundreds of pages long and are filled with term definitions that hardly anyone remembers. When it comes to implementing a marketing strategy, it’s difficult to remember the 4P’s (or 5 or 6 or whatever you follow) so it’s hard to put together a strategy that will work for the particular product/brand/company. Businesses are hungry for information on how to market effectively and this book takes a hands-on, step-by-step, easy-to-measure results approach to creating a marketing strategy that has been proven to work even at very large companies. Marketing Management: The Big Picture (Amazon affiliate link) fills the need for a book anyone can use to create an effective marketing strategy.

Why Your Crappy Free Wireless is Costing You Business
Many businesses, especially restaurants and coffee shops, have free wireless these days. However, many have really crappy free wireless (it’s slow or it cuts out, etc.) and that is costing them business.
Do it Well or Don’t Do it
If you’re going to have free wireless, you probably advertise it. It’s an enticement to come to your shop. It’s a reason why people have meetings or work there. If your free wireless isn’t that good, they’re not going to return when they want somewhere to meet or work and that’s lost business.

eRubyCon is more of a gathering #erubycon
I think it hit me late Saturday night, standing next to $600 of fine Whiskey while watching a Keynote presentation on the subtle distinctions in Regional variations, that geeks wear their passions on their breast pocket, sometimes right next to their MiFi card. Geek culture is a rhythm that, if audible to your ears, will drive your soul to seek out fellow dancers.
eRubyCon 2009, latest edition of EdgeCase’s Enterprise Ruby Convention, isn’t really about racking up the largest number of talks and demonstrations on the most number possible parallel track, like some conferences I could name. One track, one room and at most 6 speakers in a day, it is less of a conference and more of a Gathering.
