In December of last year we decided to move our blog from a hosted WordPress to WordPress.com (abbreviated as WP.com). I wrote about the advantages and disadvantages in the post Moving to WordPress.com – What to Consider. For several months it remained the right place for our blog and I still think it was the correct decision at the time. But many of the advantages of hosting with WordPress.com have actually been overridden by updates to the WordPress software. Here are the key reasons we went back to a hosted WordPress…

A Whole New Site
Welcome to our newly redesigned site. We re-organized things to make it easier for you to find information on specific topics. Hopefully you’ll like the new layout and design. We took quite a bit of time setting it up, trying to make your point of view the most important. We welcome any comments you may have.
A bit about the changes…
The menu links at the very top of the page go to more information about us and our services. The menu links below the logo/header image go to the major categories (or topics) of posts. We tried to organize these categories in a way that makes sense, but we’d welcome any feedback too. The box to the right contains all the ways to connect with us, as well as subscribing to get our content via rss, email or Twitter, along with our newsletter subscription. In the two right columns, we’ve arranged supplemental information, such as our Twitter feed, links that end up in our Internet Marketing, Strategy & Technology links, and comments by you (the most important part!).
We’ve also added our Amazon recommendations and will be experimenting with some advertising as well. We’ll try to keep that to a minimum, but it would be nice to have this blog at least support itself. Anything we promote or review on this site is something we’ve taken an in-depth look at and if we recommend it, we truly believe it’s worth it – something we would recommend directly to a friend or colleague (we’re all friends here!).
Enjoy the new site and let us know what you think!
Interviewed by Local Voice
This week I was interviewed by Local Voice about what’s important for small businesses. Local Voice, which is sponsored by Local Supplies, showcases local small business owners and gives them a chance to tell a bit of their story while sharing advice. I hope there’s some tidbit of inspiration or advice in my interview that helps you out.

You Get To Choose Your Competitors…

You may not believe it but it’s true. You get to choose your competitors. How? By narrowly defining what business and market you’re in. You do this by determining what it is that you do that’s better than anyone else (your core competence) and what benefits you bring to customers. From these two things you can determine your market in such a way that you’re the best at it (ideally). – Sarah Worsham – You Get to Choose Your Competitors… – Insights Group
Blogging over at Insights Group today about how to choose your competitors, similar to the post here from yesterday, but I give an example of how it is done. Hope to see you there!

Figuring Out Who You're Actually Competing With
I run across a lot of business people who feel like they’re competing with the entire world. They’re scared of the big companies and any little mom & pop store that shows up that might be somehow related to what they do. You may feel similarly – like the whole world is out to get you… but are you actually competing with all these companies?

A Missed Opportunity to Connect with an Enthusiastic Customer = PRFAIL
Last night I was a bar/brewery for a pr/social media meetup. I love this bar. It has free wireless, good food, great beer and no smoking. It’s a bit of a haul from where I live, but I still make it a point to meet people there, tell people about it, and give them as much business as I can. I am an enthusiastic customer.
