Your new business card starts with an @

I am wandering the halls of a technical conference, in Sandusky, Ohio this week.  Its called CodeMash.  While the presentations are solid, the real value add has been and always will be the hallway conversations with people in the tech field.  One thing I have noticed this week is a subtle but important change in business protocol.  We no longer exchange business cards, we now exchange twitter handles.

A colleague of mine, also a freelance writer, deleted his blog last weekend. When I asked him why, he cited comment trolls as the primary reason as to why he had to shut it down. “I wanted to showcase my work,” he said, “not spend a few minutes a day feeling annoyed.”. – How to Deal With Trolls on Your Professional Blog (WebWorkerDaily)

The fear of trolls is nothing new.  I run across it just about every time I suggest a discussion board or blog or any other technology which allows other people to give feedback.  Yes, you probably will have to deal with a troll from time to time, but that’s no reason to stick your head in the sand and refuse to come out.  These days comment software is pretty good at filtering out spam.  The occasional troll may get through – and yes, you may have to do some moderation, but the benefits of having conversations online will almost always be worth the effort.

Your 2010 Internet Strategy – Measurement

Measurement is vital to the success of any strategy, Internet or otherwise.  You need to know whether or not your tactics are working towards helping you reach your goal and the only way to do that is to periodically measure what you’re doing.  If tactics aren’t working, measurement can both help you identify them and figure out how to improve them.

Your 2010 Internet Strategy – Content Strategies

A lot of businesses are using social media.  And producing content.  But when you take a closer look at their content (and to a lesser extend, their interactions), it’s all really thinly veiled marketing.  While people may or may not mind being marketed to, it’s usually not what they consider useful information.  If you really want your content to work for you, you need to take a closer look at exactly what you’re saying and how.

According to a new patent that was just granted to Google, the company could soon extend the reach of its advertising program in Google Maps to Street View. This patent, which was originally filed on July 7, 2008, describes a new system for promoting ads in online mapping applications. In this patent, Google describes how it plans to identify buildings, posters, signs and billboards in these images and give advertisers the ability to replace these images with more up-to-date ads. In addition, Google also seems to plan an advertising auction for unclaimed properties.

Advertisers may have thought that their ads were good for posterity once they were captured by the roaming vans for Google’s Street View, but it looks like Google has other plans.  This is a very interesting virtual meets physical world scenario.  The advertising placements were once in the physical world, but when Google recorded and digitized them, they became virtual – and capable of being edited.  Google provides Google Maps, Local & Street View free of charge (and sells ad placements on the site via Google AdWords), but this patent will give them the opportunity to sell advertising inside their content.  Google’s advertising has mostly been around others content (other than their search results).  They are starting to move towards creating content to have ads around – kind of like a Media company might do.

Your 2010 Internet Strategy – Ways to Use Outposts

You’ve done some research and have decided on 3 or so outposts (see Friday’s post for more on outposts). There may be some confusion about the value of having outposts.  Luckily Chris Brogan recently wrote a great post on how outposts improve your ecosystem.  What I want to focus on today is some examples of how you can use your outposts – I think seeing a few examples may help clarify what a good outpost is and how you can use it.

In a sign that Google’s negotiations with the Associated Press over a new licensing contract may have reached a standstill, new AP articles are no longer being hosted in Google (NSDQ: GOOG) News; Search Engine Land‘s Danny Sullivan, who first reported the development, says that new AP articles haven’t been hosted on the site since Dec. 24. Google isn’t providing an explanation

Google and the AP have been in a bit of a tiff this past year.  The AP doesn’t like that Google is linking to and hosting full articles and Google thinks the AP is overblowing the issue.  At stake is the content that costs companies to produce – the same content they hope to make money from (either from advertising or charging for).  Google, on the other hand, hopes to provide the best possible information to searchers – so they can place their own advertising around search results.  Most content sites receive a good portion of their traffic from Google, so they’re not without their own power in the argument.  It should be interesting to see how it pans out.

Top Internet Strategy, Marketing & Technology Links – Jan 11, 2010

fleur120We’re trying a new format for our link posts – one which is hopefully more useful for you and more efficient for us.  We’ll only be posting the top links (determined either by popularity with you – clicks & retweets or by us for importance of the information), with some information about why the link is interesting or useful.  This should make it easier for you to get a snapshot of information without having to comb through a long list of links.  The full list of links will still be available throughout the day on Twitter or on our Google Reader Shared (which you can follow or subscribe to).  We’re trying something new, but we always welcome your feedback on what you think – blog@sazbean.com.  Thanks for reading!
