Find Nearby Specials with Foursquare

Location is becoming more than just a game.  More than just how many points or badges you can acquire. It’s becoming useful.  Not only can I see where my friends like to hang out, what suggestions they have, I also can see what nearby stores are offering specials. When I went to check in to Biggby Coffee in Ann Arbor today, I noticed that two nearby stores had a small “special” icon below them:

Clicking on their listing I could see what offers they had:

When I did check into Biggby, I was reminded again that there are specials nearby:

Pretty useful both for location businesses and for consumers. These are loyalty programs I can get behind (since I hate loyalty cards).

But as the service moves closer to critical mass, businesses that haven't signed up will come to a point where they have to, if only because everyone else in their neighborhood has done so. An ice cream shop can get away with ignoring Google and everything online because they rely on foot traffic. But when the smart phones in line start beeping about a better deal across the street, they will need to have a plan to deal with it.

Should be interesting, as location based services have lots of room to grow. Now if I only had a smart phone …

Scott, Agreed. Location based, mobile services are certainly the hot trend. They give local businesses a great way to interact with their customers and with other people nearby. And being able to play a game is just icing on the cake.
