I teach a few blogging for business workshops and I also occasionally run into people who’ve read my blog (thanks guys!) and I’m often asked why I blog, especially when people see that we post a couple of times per day. I often hear: “that must be a lot of work”, “I don’t have time for that”, “how do you find the time?”, “does that help your business?” So I thought I’d post some thoughts on why I blog….
Search is so important to the Internet today. Anytime someone wants to find out more information about someone or something, they turn to Google (at least for now). So you want to have some sort of control over what they find. I completely own the search results for both my name, Sarah Worsham, and for my company name, Sazbean. Pretty much everything there is content I’ve put up over the last several years.
People really don’t trust what you’re telling them at first glance/listen. Even resumes are just what you say you’ve done, but I have a large body of evidence to show that I (mostly) know what I’m talking about. Put this together with my experience (on my resume), and I have some great sales tools.
But, it’s not all about me or Sazbean. Most of why I blog is to connect with other people. To share ideas, to communicate, to learn what other people are doing and how they’re approaching issues and problems. The Internet is a rapidly developing medium and technology. No one has all the answers and there are many different ways to approach any particular problem. By tapping into a network of smart people, I’ve learned more about just about everything.
Conducting business is about people. Blogging has allowed me to meet some really great people and make connections. This is actually also true of most social media, but particularly also Twitter (at least for me). I’ve met some local people that I probably wouldn’t have met without a social presence on the web. And there’s no doubt in my mind that blogging has helped both my business and my career.
So that’s why I blog. Why do you blog? or Why don’t you blog?
