When I talk to clients and workshops about blogging for business, one of the top hangups is posting daily. I agree. Blogging daily has its difficulties, so I thought I’d share some of them…
Time
It obviously takes time to post every day. You either have to set aside some time every day to write and post or you have to set aside a longer period of time to write for the entire week. I usually write and post each day, but if I have an event or vacation, I’ll write posts ahead of time.
Content
I usually have a backlog of posts I want to write, but I don’t always have the time to write about them. Some take research or more thought than I have time for. Other times I just don’t feel like writing about what’s on my list. Most of the time I get really good ideas from reading other blogs or books. Any time I read a book, I try to keep a moleskin notebook around to jot down ideas.
Schedule
If you say you’re going to post once a day or once a week (or whatever), people expect you to post then. When you miss a post it can really affect your blog’s regular visitors – they get annoyed when they come to your site for a new post and don’t find one. I have occasionally missed a post due to a holiday or whatnot. I just try to keep them to a minimum.
Consistency
After you’ve been writing for awhile, people expect a certain level of expertise and insight in your posts. It can be hard to keep up the level of consistency in terms of post quality. Keeping a lot of ideas on hand can help when you have writer’s block.
While blogging every day can seem like a bit of a hassle, it’s a great way to build up your readership, which leads to nice business benefits (traffic, leads, branding, reputation, etc.).
What difficulties have you found with posting daily? What are your concerns with posting daily (or weekly)? What questions do you have about blogging?
