Many companies spend quite a bit of time thinking about their brand and marketing — what type of persona does the brand have, how should the brand interact with customers, etc. If you’ve spent any time building up your brand (personal brands included), does your social media personality fit the image of your brand?
We all have them in our network — those people who spam Facebook with their updates from all those games like Farmville or post personal things we really didn’t care to know about. Those types of updates seem harmless, but they certainly influence our image of that person. If you’re using social media to help build your brand, you have to be aware of how every post or comment may influence your image.
How you use social media certainly has an influence on your brand and after awhile your style takes on a personality. Maybe you’re very friendly and you try to have conversations with everyone. Or maybe you’re very giving and you try to help share what other people post. Or maybe you just use social media to market and promote yourself. All these styles influence how people think of your brand.
Let’s say your brand is all about customer service. You try to help your customers and provide the best possible service you can. You only have enough time on social media to market and promote your products. You don’t have time to spend having conversations or answering questions. How does your “sales only” social media personality fit in with your customer service-oriented brand?
Not sure what type of social media personality you have? Ask some of your colleagues or friends what they think of how you use social media. Ask them for 3-5 adjectives that represent you on social media. You can also ask them for 3-5 adjectives that explain how they feel about your brand or company. See how they compare and make adjustments to make them work together.
