Social Media is Your Permanent Record

records en blanc i negreSometimes brands forget what they stand for and post things they may regret later. This can happen to corporate, professional or personal brands. Whatever you post on social media becomes part of the public permanent record, even if you delete the post. So, take a minute to think before you post.

Available even if Deleted

Every body makes mistakes. Unfortunately, mistakes made online aren’t easily erased.  Even if the original post is removed, it may very well be available since many search engines and other sites keep a copy of content. Review your post before you send it out to the world — it may save some heartache later.  If you do make a mistake, remove it, address it, if needed, and move on.

Mixing Personal and Professional

We buy from people, not from face-less companies.  Companies are made up of people. We relate to their brand because of the people that run the company. That relationship is often built upon the personality of a brand.  Sharing things to give people an insight into your brand personality is good. Just remember that everything you share becomes part of your brand.

Too Much Information

There really is such a thing as too much information.  There are things that you don’t want to know, even about your spouse or significant other.  Yet people seem to like to share these things online. Before you do, think about whether you’d want your parents, grandparents or even kids to see the post.  Then think about what it says about your professional brand.

Inappropriate for Your Brand

Good brands have a certain personality — certain attributes which we think about when we see the brand. If you want your brand to stand out in people’s minds, figure out that personality and stick to it.  When people get to know your brand, they don’t want to be surprised by inappropriate comments or actions (which make them feel distrustful and let down). Everything you post online influences your brand, whether personal, professional or corporate.

Build Your Brand

If done correctly, social media can be a great tool for interacting with your customers and building your brand. Take some time to understand what it is your brand stands for (or what you want it to stand for). Set up guidelines for how the brand should interact online (which is helpful even if it’s just you). Build up a brand you’re proud of.
